Publicity Writer  Located in the heart of New York’s Greenwich Village, The New School is a progressive, global university that educates leaders for the creative economy in a range of disciplines from design and management to the humanities and social sciences. The Communications and External Affairs department (CEA) is the university’s comprehensive publicity, promotion, writing, design and digital media resource, playing a key role in advancing The New School’s bold mission.  CEA needs a talented Publicity Writer who can compose engaging and accessible content addressing high-level institutional messaging, educational objectives, and research across disciplines. Ideal candidates will be exceptional writers with experience in public affairs, higher education, and the arts, knowledge of traditional and digital media including emerging social media platforms, the capacity to meet the demands of a pivotal role in a large, urban institution, and energy to match the university's spirit of constant change. The Publicity Writer will contribute editorial content to New School News, the university’s bi-weekly news blog.  Responsibilities:  - Writes publicity content including press releases, newsletters, video/video promotion, talking points, white papers, op-eds, presidential and leadership communications, media pitches, and other genres as needed.  - Serves as chief content producer for the New School News, University Center News, and additional university publicity publications, ensuring that text is lively, informative, and responsive to university’s central goals. Coordinates story ideas and advance planning with communications team.  - Confers with Associate Director of University Communications and Project Management to identify new writing projects, and blog posts that support the university’s central goals as well as other academic programs, faculty expertise and public events.  - Works with professors, the Provost’s Office and Associate Director of University Communications to disseminate new research to non-academic audiences.  - Works with Social Media Director and Social Media team to coordinate and create written content for social media platforms.  - Writes and edits press releases, backgrounders, faculty profiles and other media kit content.  - Assists in the preparation of crisis communications plans and talking points in cooperation with Communications senior staff.  - Contributes to other projects directed by colleagues in the Communications and External Affairs department, including web content, videos, promotional brochures, and strategic planning documents.  - Attends functions, events, programs, seminars, etc. which may occur after business hours or on weekends. Manages on-site media and serves as liaison to photographers.  - Assists in pitching stories to media outlets, as needed.  - Remains aware of media relations trends, social media, and the technical tools needed to succeed in the current media environment.  - Performs other related duties as required.  - Reports to the Associate Director of University Communications and is part of 40+-person Communications office. Helps supervise Communications student workers.  Requirements:  - B.A. in a humanities field, journalism, communications, marketing or related discipline.  - 2-3+ years experience as a publicist, journalist, or corporate communications professional, with a focus on education, civic affairs, politics, the arts, or related field.  - Must be a superior and fast writer with a talent for communicating with an array of audiences including journalists, academics, community members, and current and prospective students.  - Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with editors to quickly produce flawless content that meets communications goals.  - Demonstrated ability to write in a variety of “voices,” from institutional to conversational.  - Demonstrated ability to translate high-level scientific or intellectual discourse to general audiences.  - Demonstrated experience managing sensitive stories.  - Capacity for building excellent relationships internally with key university leaders.  - Must be an inventive, strategic, organized, team player, able to handle both creative thinking at the 40,000-foot level and painstaking detail on the ground.   In addition to a dynamic and progressive work environment, The New School offers a competitive benefits package, including medical and dental insurance, retirement plans, flexible spending accounts and a tuition waiver.
